Why our oil paintings are different

Painted by hand.
Framed by our woodworkers.

Your oil painting is only started once you order it, and one of the collective's senior artists paints it by hand in Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City.

The archival canvas print shows the same image, printed rather than painted, so its surface is flat. Both versions come rolled, on a wooden stretcher, or framed.

Painted to order
Every oil painting order goes to one of the collective's senior artists.
Frames made in-house
The collective's woodworkers make the stretchers and the frames.

About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

A figure in a conical hat on blue paving

The lane narrows toward the distance, and a small figure in a conical hat walks along it. The paving stones are dark blue and glossy, with soft patches of yellow reflected from the walls beside them.

Tiled roofs lean over the lane, with green growth trailing down the plaster. Thin wires cross the gap above. Brushstrokes are loose and visible, so the walls look worn and uneven rather than smooth.

Mustard yellow walls against cool blue ground

The mustard yellow of the plaster turns to terracotta orange in the shaded patches, while the deep blue of the paving cools the whole lower part of the picture. Warm and cool sit side by side, and the light feels low and gentle.

The mood is quiet and a little hushed. This palette suits a hallway or a living room with white, cream or soft grey walls, where the yellow can stand as the single warm note. The tall upright format also fits a narrow stretch of wall.

FAQ

Does the wet paving reflect the walls?

Yes. The dark blue stones carry soft patches of yellow and orange, so the lane looks glossy. The reflections are loose strokes, not sharp mirror images.

How large does the figure appear in the scene?

The figure in the conical hat is small against the tall walls. It is shown in a muted garment, with no detail of the face, which keeps attention on the lane and its light.

Are the yellow walls one flat colour?

No. The plaster shifts between pale yellow, mustard and terracotta orange, with darker, mossy patches lower down, so the walls look weathered.

Is there sky in the picture?

Only a narrow strip of pale sky shows between the rooflines, with wires crossing it. Most of the picture is wall and paving.
