Why our oil paintings are different

Painted by hand.
Framed by our woodworkers.

Your oil painting is only started once you order it, and one of the collective's senior artists paints it by hand in Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City.

The archival canvas print shows the same image, printed rather than painted, so its surface is flat. Both versions come rolled, on a wooden stretcher, or framed.

Painted to order

Frames made in-house
The collective's woodworkers make the stretchers and the frames.

About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

Rust-brown girders and a bicycle heavy with straw

The iron framework fills the scene, its riveted girders painted in rust brown with patches of weathered blue-green. A bicycle carries bundles of straw, and its rider wears a conical hat and a light blue jacket. A second cyclist is further back, with a pale conical hat held in front of them.

Further along, a few figures walk toward the distant spans, small and softly drawn. A plank walkway runs along the edge of the bridge, with walkers on it, leading toward the light.

Low sun and orange patches across the roadway

The sun sits low and glows through the girders, turning the air golden yellow and casting long shadows on the ground. The roadway is covered in orange and pale blue shapes, laid on in loose, visible brushstrokes, so the surface seems to glitter where the light reaches it.

The warm orange against the cool blue in the shadows keeps the lower half lively, while the upper half stays dark and structured.

Rust and gold for a warm, grounded wall

Rust brown and golden yellow sit well in a living room painted cream or pale grey, where the orange patches stand out against the quiet wall. The tall format echoes the girders rising overhead and gives a hallway or stairwell a strong vertical.

A pale wall lets the iron framework read clearly, and the dark brown gives the room some weight.

FAQ

Can I make out the faces of the cyclists?

Only partly. The cyclists and walkers are drawn with loose strokes, so faces stay small, and the nearest rider's lower face is covered by a green scarf. What reads clearly is clothing: a conical hat, a light blue jacket and the straw bundles on the bicycle.

What are the orange and blue shapes on the roadway?

They are loose patches of colour scattered along the ground. Orange catches the sun, and pale blue sits in the shadows, so the road shimmers rather than showing clear objects.

Is the picture dark because of the iron framework?

The girders are dark brown, but the sun and the golden haze lift the scene. The brightest area is the sky and the lit roadway, so the picture feels warm rather than heavy.

How does the bridge recede into the distance?

The girders repeat and shrink along the roadway, ending in a pale golden haze. Small figures near the far spans give a sense of how long the bridge runs.
