Why our oil paintings are different

Painted by hand.
Framed by our woodworkers.

Your oil painting is only started once you order it, and one of the collective's senior artists paints it by hand in Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City.

The archival canvas print shows the same image, printed rather than painted, so its surface is flat. Both versions come rolled, on a wooden stretcher, or framed.

Painted to order
Every oil painting order goes to one of the collective's senior artists.
Frames made in-house
The collective's woodworkers make the stretchers and the frames.

You see the finished oil painting and can ask for corrections.

About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

Red and yellow lanterns over ochre walls

Rows of red and yellow lanterns hang across a narrow lane, some glowing pink or gold, with tassels trailing below. Ochre walls with brown shutters close in along the street, and the lane runs back toward more lights in the distance.

The wet stone paving gives the lanterns a second life underfoot: blurred reds, golds and a little blue spread across the stones. A bicycle with a basket is parked by the wall, a small dark shape among all that colour.

A purple dusk sky behind the warm glow

Between the rooflines the sky turns purple and blue, which keeps the red and yellow from feeling heavy. The brushstrokes are loose and visible, so the lanterns look lit from inside rather than outlined.

Choosing a room for this lantern glow

The ochre walls and red and yellow lanterns are warm, so the picture sits well in a dining room or hallway with deep green, charcoal or cream walls. Against those tones the purple dusk sky reads as the one cool note. The upright format suits a slim wall space, such as an entrance or a landing, where the rows of lanterns can climb the wall.

FAQ

What do the shutters look like?

They are slatted brown wooden shutters beside the doors and windows. Their dark tone sets off the ochre plaster and gives the walls some structure between the bright lanterns.

Do the reflections on the paving read as clear shapes?

No. The stones hold soft, blurred patches of red, yellow and a little blue, not mirrored lanterns. Seen up close they break into loose colour, which keeps the lower part of the picture moving.

Does the lane feel busy or quiet?

Quiet. No figures are clearly visible, only the bicycle by the wall, so the attention goes to the lanterns, the stones and the light.
