Why our oil paintings are different

Painted by hand.
Framed by our woodworkers.

Your oil painting is only started once you order it, and one of the collective's senior artists paints it by hand in Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City.

The archival canvas print shows the same image, printed rather than painted, so its surface is flat. Both versions come rolled, on a wooden stretcher, or framed.

Painted to order
Every oil painting order goes to one of the collective's senior artists.
Frames made in-house
The collective's woodworkers make the stretchers and the frames.

About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

Rust-orange girders above a street of stalls

The steel bridge fills most of the picture. Its crossed girders are painted in rust orange and brown, with a railed walkway running along the lower edge. Below them, the street is crowded with small things: a bicycle, blue plastic crates, a figure in a yellow jacket and a few more figures beside the stalls.

Blue and orange tarpaulins cover the stalls, and a green tree pushes up between the market and the ironwork. The sky is pale grey, and the ground is scattered with fallen leaves in warm tones.

Leafy green and grey softening the rust

The rust orange is the strongest colour, yet it never feels harsh. The pale grey sky cools it, and the leafy green tree gives the eye a place to rest. Small blue notes in the crates and tarpaulins repeat across the street.

Brushstrokes are loose and visible, especially in the sky and the road, so the steel girders and the stalls read as soft rather than sharp.

Warm white walls to match the rust girders

The grey sky and rust orange girders suit a warm white or soft grey wall, where the steel stands out without competing. It works well in a living room or a study, where the upright format gives the tall bridge room to rise.

The green tree and the blue crates also pair with natural wood, linen and muted blue furnishings.

FAQ

Does the bridge dominate the picture or share it with the street?

The bridge takes up most of the height, but the street keeps its own interest. Stalls, a bicycle, blue crates and a few figures give a lively band of detail below the ironwork.

What is the tree between the stalls and the bridge like?

It is a round, leafy mass of green, painted in lighter and darker touches. It is the only strong green in the scene, so it stands out against the rust and grey.

Are the figures in the street clearly defined?

They are painted loosely, with clothing and shape rather than faces. The figure in a yellow jacket is the clearest, a bright note against the darker stalls.

What does the ground in the street look like?

It looks damp and grey-brown, with orange leaves scattered across it. The surface is painted in loose strokes, so it reads as a soft, muted band under the bright stalls.
