Why our oil paintings are different

Painted by hand.
Framed by our woodworkers.

Your oil painting is only started once you order it, and one of the collective's senior artists paints it by hand in Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City.

The archival canvas print shows the same image, printed rather than painted, so its surface is flat. Both versions come rolled, on a wooden stretcher, or framed.

Painted to order
Every oil painting order goes to one of the collective's senior artists.
Frames made in-house
The collective's woodworkers make the stretchers and the frames.

About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

Blue-white smoke over copper burners

Several bronze burners with curved handles carry bundles of orange and red incense sticks. From each bundle the smoke climbs in thick, curling swirls, painted in loose, visible brushstrokes that make it feel like it is still moving.

Behind the burners the hall falls into shadow: dark carved beams and dark altar vessels sit in the depth, so the pale smoke stands out against them.

Red pillars and gold lettering frame the hall

Tall red pillars carry columns of gold lettering, and their warmth repeats in the red of the incense bundles. The copper brown of the burners ties the lower part of the picture to the dark wood above.

The result is a warm, quiet scene with one cool note, the blue-white smoke, running through it.

A warm picture for a calm, pale wall

The red and copper brown suit a wall in cream, warm white or soft grey, where the smoke reads clearly. A landscape format like this fits a study or a living room, above a sideboard or a low shelf, where the dark hall adds depth without darkening the room.

FAQ

Is the smoke painted in detail or as soft shapes?

It is painted as loose, swirling shapes in blue-white with visible strokes, so the smoke looks airy and in motion rather than outlined. Some swirls are thick and bright, others thin out into the dark hall.

Where does the gold appear in the picture?

Gold shows mainly as lettering running down the red pillars. It stays a small accent next to the larger red and copper brown areas, so it reads as detail rather than as a main colour.

Do the incense sticks read clearly as sticks, or blend into the smoke?

The orange and red sticks stay distinct as upright bundles rising from each burner, so their glow is easy to pick out. Above their tips the smoke takes over and softens into pale swirls.

Is the background dark or light?

The hall behind the burners is mostly dark, with deep brown beams and shadowed altar vessels. A few pale patches in the distance keep it from feeling closed in.
