Why our oil paintings are different

Painted by hand.
Framed by our woodworkers.

Your oil painting is only started once you order it, and one of the collective's senior artists paints it by hand in Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City.

The archival canvas print shows the same image, printed rather than painted, so its surface is flat. Both versions come rolled, on a wooden stretcher, or framed.

Painted to order
Every oil painting order goes to one of the collective's senior artists.
Frames made in-house
The collective's woodworkers make the stretchers and the frames.

About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

Yellow and orange trees framing a stone gate

Two big trees fill the upper part of the scene, one in golden yellow leaves and one in burnt orange. Their branches reach toward each other and open onto a pale blue sky, with the old stone gate and its tiled roof glowing at the far end of the street.

Below them the street is lined with shopfronts under striped awnings, hung with small garments. Pots of flowers sit along the pavement, and a few figures walk toward the gate, some near a cycle rickshaw and a bicycle.

Light on paved stones and fallen leaves

The paved street shines with soft reflections, and fallen leaves in orange and yellow are scattered across it. Slate blue awnings cool the warm trees, so the golden yellow and burnt orange stay lively without becoming heavy. The brushstrokes are loose and visible, especially in the leaves.

Yellow tree, orange tree and a bright gate in the room

From across the room you see two blocks of colour, the yellow tree and the orange tree, with the gate as a bright point between them. Up close, the awnings, flower pots and small figures reward a longer look.

The warm palette suits a living room or dining room with cream, warm white or soft grey walls, where the burnt orange can stand out. The slate blue awnings also sit well against deeper blue-grey walls.

FAQ

Are there people in the scene, and how detailed are they?

Yes, a few small figures walk along the street, and a cycle rickshaw and a bicycle stand among the shops. They are painted small and in loose strokes, so they give life and scale without drawing attention from the trees.

What is the weather and time of day like in the picture?

The sky is pale blue with soft light, and the paved stones reflect it in bright patches. Fallen leaves lie across the street. The mood is calm and sunny.

Do the small shop details hold up when viewed closely?

Yes. Up close you can pick out the striped awnings, small garments hanging under them and pots of yellow and pink flowers by the pavement. Each is shown in a few brushstrokes rather than hard outlines.
