The story behind this artwork.

A newspaper reader amid a crowded street stall

The eye goes first to the elderly woman with grey hair and glasses, her face bent over a large open newspaper. Her blouse is a soft blue pattern and her trousers are dark navy, so she reads as one calm shape against a busy background.

Around her the street is packed with goods: shelves of packaged items, a white motorbike, stacked folded blue cloth edged with lace, and a boy in a pale shirt looking at a small device. A red bucket and a pair of yellow sandals on the grey ground add small, sharp notes.

Grey ground, blue cloth and yellow accents

The palette is built on the grey of the paved street and the blue of the woman’s blouse and the folded cloth. Yellow sandals and yellow packaging, with a few red touches, keep the scene warm. The brushwork is loose and visible, most of all in the street surface.
