Why our oil paintings are different

Painted by hand.
Framed by our woodworkers.

Your oil painting is only started once you order it, and one of the collective's senior artists paints it by hand in Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City.

The archival canvas print shows the same image, printed rather than painted, so its surface is flat. Both versions come rolled, on a wooden stretcher, or framed.

Painted to order
Every oil painting order goes to one of the collective's senior artists.
Frames made in-house
The collective's woodworkers make the stretchers and the frames.

About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

A cart, a filled baguette and a waiting customer

The banh mi cart sits right of centre under a red-brown roof. The woman behind it wears a conical hat and a dark long-sleeved top, and she smiles as she presses fillings into a baguette. In front of her the counter holds a bunch of green herbs, sliced cucumber, plates of pink sliced meat and more loaves. Above them, a glass case shows stacked baguettes and roasted meat.

At left a man in a short-sleeved grey shirt and dark trousers stands with his arms at his sides, facing the cart. Behind him a rider in a blue helmet passes on a red motorbike.

Thick oil strokes in orange, crimson and teal

The paint is laid on in short, loaded strokes that stay visible, especially in the cart’s panelled doors and on the road, where orange, blue and cream marks cross each other. The roof and cabinet carry deep reds and burnt oranges, set against the teal and blue of the cart’s frame, the shadowed street and the helmet of a rider on the right.

Lanterns in red and orange glow along the shopfronts, and a pale warm light shines inside the cart. The sky above is peach and soft blue.

Why this square street scene suits warm, lived-in rooms

The cart fills the centre of the square, with the two figures facing each other across the counter. Moving motorbikes and lanterns frame them at both sides. The eye goes first to the hands and the baguette.

Its orange and red palette suits dining rooms, kitchens and cafe walls, and the teal accents work well beside cream or pale grey paint. The square format also fits a narrow wall or a spot beside a window.

FAQ

What is the woman at the cart doing?

She is holding a baguette in one hand and filling it with her other hand, smiling as she works. She wears a conical hat and a dark long-sleeved top.

What is laid out on the counter of the banh mi cart?

A bunch of green herbs, sliced cucumber, plates of pink sliced meat and several golden baguettes sit on the counter. More loaves are stacked in the glass case above.

What is happening in the street behind the cart?

Riders on motorbikes pass on both sides, one on a red scooter at left and one in a blue helmet at right. Red and orange lanterns hang along the shopfronts.

Would the orange and red palette suit a cream wall?

Yes. The burnt orange and deep red sit warmly against cream, and the teal and blue accents balance them. Pale grey walls would let the lantern glow stand out.
