The story behind this artwork.

White silk against a weathered golden wall

A figure in a white ao dai and a conical hat is beside a bicycle with a small basket on the handlebars. Behind them the wall is worn yellow plaster, patched with ochre, brown and pale grey, and a small dark window grille sits high in it.

The street below is wet and slate blue, scattered with pale flecks of light. It mirrors the wall, the bicycle and the white ao dai, so the picture reads almost as two scenes, one above the other. The brushstrokes are loose and visible, which keeps the reflection soft.

Why the golden yellow and white suit a quiet room

The golden yellow wall is warm without being loud, and the white ao dai gives one clean, bright note against it. Together with the slate blue of the street, the palette is calm and sunlit.

FAQ

Is the reflection a clear mirror image?

It is clear in shape but softened. The white ao dai, the bicycle wheels and the conical hat all repeat below, while the ripples and pale flecks of light on the wet street break the edges.

Does the ao dai stay plain white?

Mostly. Hints of pale blue and grey shade the folds, which keeps the garment from looking flat against the golden wall.

Is the yellow wall plain or varied?
