The story behind this artwork.

A blue cyclo against red doors and yellow walls

The cyclo is the strongest cool note against the warm reds and golds. A man in a light blue shirt and white cap walks the blue cyclo, with a green cover over its seat, along the street in front of the doorway.

Behind him, orange lanterns hang under a tiled roof, and the carved red door carries a round latticed panel in gold. Yellow wall surfaces with dark blue vertical panels frame the entrance, while palm fronds soften the edge of the scene. The brushstrokes are loose and visible, so the tiles and carving read as texture rather than hard detail.

Red and yellow warmth for a cream entrance wall

The red doors and yellow walls give this picture a warm centre, and the blue cyclo keeps it from tipping into one colour. It suits a wall painted cream or soft white, where the red and orange lanterns can carry the room.

FAQ

What do the dark blue side panels show?

They are tall dark blue strips on the yellow walls on either side of the entrance, covered in small gold lettering. The writing is only suggested with loose strokes, so it reads as pattern, not as words.

What is the carved door like?

It is red with gold ornament and a round latticed panel, with painted panels around it. The detail is suggested with loose strokes rather than sharp lines.

Is the roofline clear in the picture?

The tiled roofs are painted as rows of brown tiles with small round ends, and a decorated ridge with curling shapes crowns the top. It reads as dark and ornate against a pale background.

Are the lanterns a strong colour?
