Why our oil paintings are different

Painted by hand.
Framed by our woodworkers.

Your oil painting is only started once you order it, and one of the collective's senior artists paints it by hand in Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City.

The archival canvas print shows the same image, printed rather than painted, so its surface is flat. Both versions come rolled, on a wooden stretcher, or framed.

Painted to order
Every oil painting order goes to one of the collective's senior artists.
Frames made in-house
The collective's woodworkers make the stretchers and the frames.

About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

A bowl of pho with herbs, lime and chopsticks

The bowl of pho fills the centre of the canvas. Slices of beef lie on pale noodles in a golden broth, topped with green onion rings and a few red chilli pieces. A white spoon rests inside the bowl and two wooden chopsticks angle across its right rim. Thin white steam rises from the surface.

To the left sits a plate of basil leaves, pale bean sprouts and three green lime wedges. At the right edge, a jar with an amber liquid and a metal lid stands on a small saucer.

Thick oil strokes in amber, red and blue grey

The table is built from broad, flat strokes of amber, orange, cream and dark red, left visibly separate. The bowl carries streaks of blue and lilac in its white glaze. The colour is warm in the foreground and cooler in the street, where blue grey reflections run across the wet road.

Diners and motorbikes behind the table

The view is set low, at table height, so the pho dominates and the street recedes. Behind it a woman in a red top and several men in blue shirts eat at a long wooden table. Beyond the open front, two riders on motorbikes pass under red and orange lanterns.

This depth gives the painting a clear order: food, then diners, then street.

Where this warm horizontal street scene suits a room

The amber and red palette suits a dining room, kitchen or restaurant wall, where the subject speaks for itself. The landscape format gives the long table and the street room to spread, so it works well on a wide wall with soft or warm light.

What is on the plate beside the bowl?

The plate holds green basil leaves, pale bean sprouts and three lime wedges, set at the left of the table.

Who is sitting in the background?

Anonymous diners eat at a long wooden table: a woman in a red top, and men in blue shirts, some holding chopsticks. Beyond them, riders pass on motorbikes.

Which colours run from the pho table to the wet street?

Amber, orange and deep red fill the table and lanterns, while blue grey tones appear in the wet street and the glaze of the bowl.
