Why our oil paintings are different

Painted by hand.
Framed by our woodworkers.

Your oil painting is only started once you order it, and one of the collective's senior artists paints it by hand in Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City.

The archival canvas print shows the same image, printed rather than painted, so its surface is flat. Both versions come rolled, on a wooden stretcher, or framed.

Painted to order
Every oil painting order goes to one of the collective's senior artists.
Frames made in-house
The collective's woodworkers make the stretchers and the frames.

About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

Tiled bridge, rowboat and paddy workers on one river

The scene evokes Thanh Toan: a covered wooden bridge with a stepped roof of terracotta tiles and curled grey ridge ends, carried on thick wooden piers. Railings run along the walkway, and a few walkers cross it. Others wait at the right end, where a figure in a blue shirt and conical hat carries two baskets up the path.

In the lower left, a woman in a purple top and conical hat rows a wooden boat. A man in a grey shirt and dark cap sits beside her, and a round woven basket rests between them. The bridge piers and the sky are reflected in the water around the boat.

Behind the bridge, farmers in conical hats bend over flooded paddies. Coconut palms, a few red-roofed houses and low blue hills close the horizon.

Soft oil strokes in leaf green, terracotta and cloud white

The brushwork is realistic, with thick white strokes in the clouds and small dabs of light and dark green in the foliage. The roof tiles are built from warm orange and rust, which stand out against the greens. The water carries pale blue, olive and grey, and the dirt path is a sandy beige.

The eye moves from the boat up the pier reflections to the roof, then along the path to the paddies. A large tree on the right frames the bridge, and the foreground leaves keep the bank in shadow.

A square rural river scene for calm, bright walls

The square format gives the bridge and the boat equal weight, so the picture sits well on a compact wall or beside a window. The greens and sky blue suit rooms with white, cream or pale wood surfaces, and the terracotta roof gives a warm accent. The mood is quiet and daytime, which suits a hallway, a dining area or a reading corner.

FAQ

Who is in the rowboat below the bridge?

Two anonymous figures. A woman in a purple top and conical hat rows with a long oar, and a man in a grey shirt and dark cap sits beside her. A round woven basket rests between them.

What colour is the bridge roof?

The roof is covered in terracotta and rust tiles, with grey ridge ends that curl upward. Against the green paddies and blue sky, it is the warmest colour in the painting.

What is happening in the fields behind the bridge?

Several farmers in conical hats bend over flooded green paddies. A path winds through the fields, and a figure in a blue shirt walks toward the bridge carrying two baskets.

Which colours would the bridge scene pair with on a pale wall?

The leaf green, sky blue and terracotta roof stand out against white, cream or pale wood. The square shape keeps the bridge, boat and paddies together in one balanced view.
