The story behind this artwork.

A red ao dai against carved red doors

The figure wears a long red ao dai that falls almost to the stone floor, with a hint of plum and green at the hem. Behind it stand wooden doors with lattice panels and carved lower boards, and round red pillars that echo the silk.

The paving is laid in muted grey and terracotta tiles, which lets the garment stay the brightest thing in the scene. Brushstrokes are loose and visible, so the red walls and pillars look weathered and warm.

Deep blue shadow behind the doorway

Beyond the doors the interior drops into dark blue, almost black. That depth makes the red ao dai and the red pillars glow, and gives the scene a quiet, still mood.
