Why our oil paintings are different

Painted by hand.
Framed by our woodworkers.

Your oil painting is only started once you order it, and one of the collective's senior artists paints it by hand in Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City.

The archival canvas print shows the same image, printed rather than painted, so its surface is flat. Both versions come rolled, on a wooden stretcher, or framed.

Painted to order
Every oil painting order goes to one of the collective's senior artists.
Frames made in-house
The collective's woodworkers make the stretchers and the frames.

About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

A steel phin over a glass of dark coffee

The steel phin sits on top of a clear glass, its lid in place and its handle curving out to one side. Below it a thin thread of coffee falls into the glass, where a dark brown layer rests on a paler cream one.

A few coffee beans lie on the tabletop beside the glass. Further back, a cream ceramic jug and a folded cloth stay soft and blurred, so the eye keeps returning to the filter.

Silver grey, coffee brown and warm cream light

Soft light washes the wall and the weathered wooden table in cream, pale grey and touches of blue. The silver of the phin catches that light, while the coffee brown of the glass and the beans gives the picture its one deep note.

The brushstrokes are loose and visible, especially along the wood grain of the table, which gives the quiet scene a lived-in look.

Where the cream and brown palette fits a wall

The warm cream and silver grey sit comfortably against white, beige or soft grey walls, and the coffee brown picks up wooden furniture. A kitchen or a dining corner suits it best, where the phin and the glass of coffee feel at home.

FAQ

Is the coffee shown still dripping?

A thin thread of coffee falls from the base of the phin into the glass, so the picture shows the drip in progress. The glass already holds a dark brown layer over a paler cream one.

Do the coffee beans stand out against the table?

Yes, the dark brown beans read clearly against the pale, worn wood, which is streaked with cream and grey. They give a small repeat of the coffee colour away from the glass.

Is the background sharp or soft?

It is soft. The cream jug, the folded cloth and the wall are painted loosely and blurred, so the silver phin and the glass hold the attention.
