Why our oil paintings are different

Painted by hand.
Framed by our woodworkers.

Your oil painting is only started once you order it, and one of the collective's senior artists paints it by hand in Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City.

The archival canvas print shows the same image, printed rather than painted, so its surface is flat. Both versions come rolled, on a wooden stretcher, or framed.

Painted to order
Every oil painting order goes to one of the collective's senior artists.
Frames made in-house
The collective's woodworkers make the stretchers and the frames.

About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

Farmers cutting and carrying sheaves along a curving terrace path

This rice harvest scene is laid out along one winding path that runs from the lower right up to the distant hills. In the lower left, three farmers in conical hats bend into standing golden rice and cut it with curved sickles. Their jackets are brown, green and navy, and their trousers are dark.

Further along the path, four figures walk in a line with bundles of rice hung from poles across their shoulders. Another figure with a sickle stands near the top of the bend. At upper right, pale rectangular mats hold heaps of yellow grain, and loose sheaves lie on the cut stubble in the foreground.

Thick oil strokes in gold, olive and ochre

The paint is laid in broad, flat strokes with visible ridges. Short vertical dabs mark the stubble, and longer curved bands shape the terraces in olive green, ochre and deep brown. The standing rice in the lower left is built from yellow and orange flicks.

Soft blue and grey mountains close the top of the canvas, which makes the warm fields in front look brighter. The colours are limited and balanced, so the picture stays clear and uncluttered.

Portrait format with golden light for cream walls and dining rooms

The portrait format lets the eye follow the path from the bottom corner to the hills. The gold and olive palette suits cream, warm white or soft green walls, and rooms with daylight. The figures are small and calm, so the picture works in a dining room, restaurant or office where a steady, warm image is wanted.

FAQ

What are the farmers in the lower left doing?

Three farmers in conical hats bend forward and cut standing golden rice with curved sickles. They wear brown, green and navy jackets with dark trousers.

How are the sheaves being carried?

Four figures walk along the path with bundles of rice hanging from poles across their shoulders. One more figure with a sickle stands near the bend at the top.

What are the pale shapes at upper right?

They are pale rectangular mats with heaps of yellow grain on them, set beside the terraces. They echo the gold of the standing rice.

Which walls suit this golden palette?

Cream, warm white and soft green walls suit it, because the painting is built from gold, olive and ochre with blue hills at the top. The tall format fits a narrow wall.
