Rice terraces, Hmong timber houses, Sapa hillsides and the Ta Xua ridge make up this northwest Vietnam wall art, painted in ripe gold, moss and olive green, slate grey, indigo blue and the white of valley mist. Pick a painting made by hand in oils, or an archival canvas print of the same view.

Smoke, ridges and terrace curves in the highland landscapes

Landscape is the subject of more than half of the works. One painting sets a Hmong village of timber houses on a mountain slope, with chimney smoke, curved terraces and storm clouds over the ridges. One more has amber and olive ridges stepping down the slope, mist between the rows, and a cluster of dark-roofed houses beneath a pink and gold sky. In the Ta Xua painting, a jagged ridge rises out of a sea of clouds, and a small stilt hut stands on a green ledge beside three tiny figures.

The terrace views also hang in Rice Fields, where the same gold and green fill the whole frame.

Indigo cloths and harvest paths

Sapa appears in a good share of the paintings. In one square scene, indigo cloths with white patterns hang from bamboo poles above round dye vats, and wooden houses and green hills fade into mist behind. It is built on deep blues against soft greens.

Daily life is shown by a few of the works. In the tall harvest painting, conical-hatted farmers cut ripe rice and haul sheaves down a curving path between the terraces. A horizontal scene winds up a misty hill path with basket-carrying women and a man leading water buffalo, fog in the valley and a low sun on the ridges. Paintings of people at work in the fields like these also hang in Countryside.

Choosing gold, indigo or grey-green for your wall

The gold of the harvest terraces sits well on a pale wall. The indigo and green of the dye vat scene suit a white or light grey one. The cloud ridge and the foggy buffalo path keep to greens and greys, which pair easily with natural wood.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which northwest Vietnam places do the paintings show?
The paintings show Sapa hill villages, the Ta Xua ridge above the clouds, Hmong houses on mountain slopes and terraced fields. They are painted scenes, not exact surveyed views.
Is there a painting of the rice harvest?
Yes. Farmers in conical hats cut the ripe rice and carry sheaves along a winding path, among golden terraces, pale drying mats and blue hills.
Which paintings suit a room with blue or green walls?
The indigo cloth scene from Sapa is built on deep blues against soft greens, and the misty mountain views run on layered greens and greys. Both sit calmly beside natural wood and neutral fabrics.
Are there highland paintings without people in them?
Yes. The Hmong village with chimney smoke and the misty terraces at sunset are led by roofs, ridges, mist and terrace curves rather than by figures.
