Why our oil paintings are different

Painted by hand.
Framed by our woodworkers.

Your oil painting is only started once you order it, and one of the collective's senior artists paints it by hand in Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City.

The archival canvas print shows the same image, printed rather than painted, so its surface is flat. Both versions come rolled, on a wooden stretcher, or framed.

Painted to order
Every oil painting order goes to one of the collective's senior artists.
Frames made in-house
The collective's woodworkers make the stretchers and the frames.

About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

A tiered pagoda rising out of river mist

The pagoda is the tallest thing in the scene, built of many tiers with arched windows and curved roof edges. Its walls are ochre and terracotta, touched with muted green and red, so it glows gently against the pale sky.

Mist gathers among the trees at its base and softens the hills behind. Loose, visible brushstrokes in the clouds keep the whole view quiet and hazy.

Small boats on grey-blue, mirror-still water

Several wooden boats drift across the river, some with woven canopies and figures in conical hats. They are small beside the pagoda, which gives the tower its height. The water holds soft reflections of the sky and the boats in pale blue-grey with pinks near the hulls.

Warm ochre against cool grey for a calm room

The cool grey-blue of the sky and river dominates, with warm ochre in the pagoda as the single accent. That balance suits walls in white, cream or pale grey, and works well in a living room or a quiet study. The upright format echoes the height of the tower.

FAQ

Are the boats on the river detailed or simple?

They are small and softly handled. You can make out wooden hulls, woven canopies and figures in conical hats, but no fine detail, so they read as quiet life on the water.

How clear is the pagoda compared with the trees?

The pagoda is the most defined shape, with its tiers, arched windows and curved roofs readable. The trees and hills around it soften into mist, which makes the tower stand out.

Is there strong colour in the scene?

Colour is restrained. Warm ochre and terracotta in the pagoda are the strongest notes, with small touches of red and green, against a pale, cloudy sky.
