Why our oil paintings are different

Painted by hand.
Framed by our woodworkers.

Your oil painting is only started once you order it, and one of the collective's senior artists paints it by hand in Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City.

The archival canvas print shows the same image, printed rather than painted, so its surface is flat. Both versions come rolled, on a wooden stretcher, or framed.

Painted to order
Every oil painting order goes to one of the collective's senior artists.
Frames made in-house
The collective's woodworkers make the stretchers and the frames.

About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

Baskets, cloth tables and shoppers along a hill market lane

This square painting shows a Hmong market on a pale dirt lane. Woven baskets fill both lower corners, and more hang from a post at upper left. Beyond them, tables carry folded cloth in stripes of red, blue and cream, and heaps of green and red vegetables.

Women in head scarves, dark skirts and coloured sashes bend over the tables or walk the lane, some with baskets on their arms. They are small, anonymous figures, shown by clothing and gesture. Canvas awnings in cream, blue and red close the lane toward the back.

Thick oil strokes in earth brown, indigo and sage

The paint is laid on in short, heavy strokes. The wicker is built from warm browns and ochres, the clothing from indigo, plum and green, and the sky from grey and white clouds with patches of blue. Bright cloth and vegetables stand out against the browns, so the eye moves through the lane in small hits of colour.

A mountain backdrop and a square format for warm walls

Behind the awnings, wooden houses on stilts and green hills rise to a cloudy sky, so the busy lane has open space above it. The square format keeps basket-filled corners and sky in balance.

The earthy palette suits walls in cream, stone or warm white, and rooms where wood and woven textures already sit. The Hmong market scene gives a dining area or hallway a lot to look at, without bright colour overwhelming it.

FAQ

What is on the tables in the market?

The tables hold folded cloth in red, blue, cream and striped patterns, and heaps of green and red vegetables. Wicker bowls and pots sit beside them.

What do the women at the stalls wear on their heads and waists?

The women wear head scarves in pink, green or dark blue, dark skirts with embroidered bands, and coloured sashes at the waist. Some carry baskets or shoulder bags. They are small anonymous figures.

What fills the background above the stalls?

Wooden houses with pitched roofs, some on stilts, stand on green hills. Blue-grey mountains and a cloudy sky rise behind them.

Do the brown baskets and indigo cloth suit a cream wall?

Yes. The browns, ochres and sage green of the baskets and hills sit well on cream or warm white walls, and the indigo and red cloth give accents without a harsh contrast.
