Why our oil paintings are different

Painted by hand.
Framed by our woodworkers.

Your oil painting is only started once you order it, and one of the collective's senior artists paints it by hand in Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City.

The archival canvas print shows the same image, printed rather than painted, so its surface is flat. Both versions come rolled, on a wooden stretcher, or framed.

Painted to order
Every oil painting order goes to one of the collective's senior artists.
Frames made in-house
The collective's woodworkers make the stretchers and the frames.

About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

Shrimp and pork spring rolls on a grey plate

This spring roll painting centres on a round grey plate with a brown rim. Three rolls lie side by side on it, wrapped in clear rice paper. Pink and orange shrimp curl against the wrapper, and coriander leaves sit flat beneath it. Green chive stems poke out of the upper ends.

The roll at lower left shows slices of pale pork and white rice vermicelli at its open end. In the middle, one roll is cut across, so you see lettuce, pork, noodles and a shrimp inside.

Around the plate, a bowl of brown sauce with crushed peanuts and red chilli sits at upper left, and a second at lower left. A small dish above holds two lime wedges, sliced red chilli and garlic cloves. At upper right, a woven basket holds coriander, purple leaves and lettuce.

Broad oil strokes in tan, green and coral

The table is built from wide, flat strokes in tan, cream and brown, with grey and blue streaks at the edges. The brushwork is loose there and tighter on the rolls, where thin pale glazes suggest the clear wrapper and small touches of white mark its folds.

Coral shrimp and red chilli are the warmest accents. Fresh green herbs and lime answer them against the neutral wood and grey plate.

A square food scene for kitchens and dining rooms

The square format keeps the plate, bowls and herb basket in one balanced view from above. The soft tan ground and the green and coral accents suit a kitchen, a dining room or a restaurant wall, especially beside wood, cream or pale sage.
