Why our oil paintings are different

Painted by hand.
Framed by our woodworkers.

Your oil painting is only started once you order it, and one of the collective's senior artists paints it by hand in Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City.

The archival canvas print shows the same image, printed rather than painted, so its surface is flat. Both versions come rolled, on a wooden stretcher, or framed.

Painted to order
Every oil painting order goes to one of the collective's senior artists.
Frames made in-house
The collective's woodworkers make the stretchers and the frames.

About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

Ochre walls and lanterns over a cobbled street

Tall ochre-yellow buildings close in on both sides of the alley, their wooden shutters and tiled eaves worn and warm. Paper lanterns in red, yellow and green hang in rows overhead and trail away toward a pale, glowing sky.

A figure in a conical hat walks the cobbles with baskets hanging from a shoulder pole. Further along, motorbikes and a few small figures keep the street busy. A shopfront with clothes on rails glows orange inside, and potted plants sit against the walls.

Lantern red against dark brown shadow

The light is low and golden. It catches the cobbles in patches of cream, orange and grey, while dark brown shadow gathers under the eaves and along the shopfronts. The brushstrokes stay loose and visible, so the stones and walls read as colour rather than fine detail.

The red lanterns are the sharpest accents in an otherwise amber scene, and they lead the eye down the alley.

Warm ochre suits a cream or deep green wall

The ochre yellow and lantern red are strongest on a cream, warm white or deep green wall, where the dark brown shadows have room to settle. A dining room or a hallway suits the narrow, tall-street composition well.

The glow works best where evening light is already soft, so the lanterns keep their warmth.

FAQ

Can you make out faces on the figures in the street?

No. The figures are small and loosely brushed, so they read through clothing and shape: the conical hat, the shoulder pole with baskets and the riders on motorbikes. This keeps the focus on the street and its light.

Do the cobbles look sharp or loose?

They are loose. Each stone is a patch of cream, grey, orange or dark brown, and the patches shrink as the street recedes. Up close they look like colour, and from a distance they read as paving.

What is inside the shopfront with the orange glow?

Clothes hang on rails inside, painted as soft shapes in orange, blue and teal. The open front gives the dark wooden frontage a bright, warm break and draws the eye along the street.
