Why our oil paintings are different

Painted by hand.
Framed by our woodworkers.

Your oil painting is only started once you order it, and one of the collective's senior artists paints it by hand in Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City.

The archival canvas print shows the same image, printed rather than painted, so its surface is flat. Both versions come rolled, on a wooden stretcher, or framed.

Painted to order
Every oil painting order goes to one of the collective's senior artists.
Frames made in-house
The collective's woodworkers make the stretchers and the frames.

About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

Conical hats on a white curve of sand

The scene evokes Phu Quoc at the end of the day. A pale beach bends from the lower right toward a dark headland, and small groups of figures follow it. They wear conical hats and carry baskets, and two at the front drag nets behind them.

On the left, tall palms lean over the sand with dark green and olive fronds. Below them, three wooden boats with red hulls and yellow cabins sit in a calm teal cove, with ropes running toward the shore.

Thick oil strokes in cream, teal and burnt orange

The sand is built from heavy, creamy strokes that stand out as ridges, with brown and amber patches near the foreground. The sea shifts from teal near the shore to deep blue farther out, and orange reflections break across the swells.

Above the dark headland, layered clouds in peach, rose and grey stretch across the sky, and a small orange sun sits low on the right horizon. That orange lands again on the swells and on the wet sand by the foam, while the cove under the boats stays teal and cool.

A wide coastline that suits warm, quiet rooms

The landscape format lets the shoreline run across the canvas, and the eye follows the walkers from the foreground back to the headland. Dark palms frame the left edge while the right stays open.

The cream, amber and teal tones suit living rooms, bedrooms and dining areas with neutral or warm walls. The calm horizon and small figures make a restful picture for a wall seen from across the room.

FAQ

What are the people on the sand carrying?

The figures carry round baskets in their hands, and the two nearest the lower right also drag nets behind them. All wear conical hats and are shown small, as anonymous walkers.

What do the boats look like?

Three wooden boats sit in the cove on the left. They have red hulls, yellow and orange cabins, tall masts and dark nets piled on deck, with ropes running toward the shore.

Where does the low orange sun sit above the headland and sea?

The sun sits low on the right horizon, a bright orange spot under layered peach and grey clouds. Its colour is repeated in streaks across the water and in warm patches on the sand.

Do the cream sand, orange sky and teal sea suit a bedroom or dining room?

Yes. The cream sand, burnt orange sky and teal water are warm and soft, with dark palms only at the left edge. The landscape format suits a wide wall in a calm room.
