The story behind this artwork.

A wooden boat, white ao dai, and a bridge ahead

The boat is long and narrow, with weathered planks, and it heads up the canal toward a bridge with a tiled roof and dark arches. Figures in white ao dai wear conical hats, and the white of their clothes is the lightest note against the water.

Along the banks, yellow buildings and red walls stand above a stone embankment. Their colours drop into the river as broken reflections, so the water carries both the warm shapes and the sky.

Deep blue water broken into loose brushstrokes

The river fills most of the picture in deep blue, with lighter ripples running across it. The brushstrokes stay loose and visible, which keeps the water moving. From across a room you see a blue field, a pale boat and a warm bridge. Up close the yellow reflections and the plank edges of the boat become clear.

Yellow reflections and white ao dai on a calm wall

The deep blue water suits a calm room with white or soft grey walls, such as a living room or a quiet hallway, where the yellow reflections can stand out. The tall upright format gives the boat and the bridge room to lead the eye upward.
