Why our oil paintings are different

Painted by hand.
Framed by our woodworkers.

Your oil painting is only started once you order it, and one of the collective's senior artists paints it by hand in Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City.

The archival canvas print shows the same image, printed rather than painted, so its surface is flat. Both versions come rolled, on a wooden stretcher, or framed.

Painted to order
Every oil painting order goes to one of the collective's senior artists.
Frames made in-house
The collective's woodworkers make the stretchers and the frames.

About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

Mustard wall, green stools and a red pole

The scene is a corner of old Hanoi. A weathered mustard yellow wall fills much of the picture, its plaster worn through in patches, with a pale shuttered doorway set into it. Along the pavement are small stools in green, blue and brick orange.

A red and white pole carries blue street signs beside the wall. Above, leafy green plants spill over a low roof, and a tall doorway with pale patterned panels opens to the side.

Soft light on a wet grey street

The light is soft and overcast-looking, with dark recesses under the roof and inside the tall doorway. The grey street has a damp sheen, and the brick orange pavement picks up a little warmth. Loose strokes show in the green leaves and the crumbling plaster, so the wall looks worn rather than smooth.

Where this yellow and green palette fits

The mustard yellow and leaf green suit a wall in warm white, cream or soft grey, where the yellow becomes the main colour. It fits a dining area or a hallway where a quiet, lived-in street feels at home.

The square format sits comfortably above a console or a narrow table, with the green stools and the red and white pole giving the eye small places to rest.

FAQ

Are there any people in this street scene?

No figures are visible. That keeps the corner quiet and lets the wall, plants and street take the attention.

Is the yellow wall painted flat or with variation?

It varies. Patches of paler plaster, darker stains and bare brick-orange areas break up the mustard yellow, and some faint blue marks show on the lower part of the wall.

What is growing above the doorway?

Leafy green plants spill over the low roof and hang down above the shuttered door. They are painted in loose greens that contrast with the yellow wall.

Does the street look wet?

The grey road has a damp sheen with pale reflections, and the pavement beside it is a brick orange.
