Why our oil paintings are different

Painted by hand.
Framed by our woodworkers.

Your oil painting is only started once you order it, and one of the collective's senior artists paints it by hand in Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City.

The archival canvas print shows the same image, printed rather than painted, so its surface is flat. Both versions come rolled, on a wooden stretcher, or framed.

Painted to order
Every oil painting order goes to one of the collective's senior artists.
Frames made in-house
The collective's woodworkers make the stretchers and the frames.

About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

Stilt hut on a ledge above the cloud sea

The sun sits low and small near the top centre, just behind the highest peak, and its light runs down the ridge in amber. Clouds fill every valley below, gold near the horizon on the left and grey and cream toward the bottom edge. This is the Ta Xua scene as the canvas presents it.

The ridge steps down toward the viewer in broken rock faces. On the right, a small wooden hut on stilts with a pitched roof stands on a green ledge. Three tiny figures in dark clothing stand near it, two on the left of the hut and one on the right.

Amber, moss green and grey in layered oil strokes

The rock is painted in brown, rust and olive, with cooler grey on the shaded cliff faces and bright green grass in the hollows. The clouds are softened and blended, with thicker, lighter strokes where the sun catches their tops. The painted texture is clearest on the rock and grass, and the sky stays smooth and pale.

A tall canvas where the eye climbs to the sun

The vertical format lets the ridges stack from the foreground ledge to the peak and the sun. The hut and figures are the smallest forms, so the mountain looks large beside them. The warm upper half and the cool grey clouds below give the picture two clear zones of light.

Its amber and moss tones suit a quiet wall with soft daylight, such as a hallway, a bedroom or a study. The tall shape fits a narrow stretch of wall, and the warm sky stands out on cream, white or deep green.

FAQ

What stands on the ledge near the figures?

A small wooden hut on stilts with a pitched roof. It sits on a green ledge on the right of the canvas. Three tiny figures stand close to it, which shows how large the ridge is.

How does the low sun light the ridge and clouds?

The sun is a small bright disc just behind the highest peak, near the top centre. Amber light spreads along the ridge and into the clouds on the left.

Which colours dominate the clouds?

The clouds are gold and cream near the horizon and turn warm grey and soft blue-grey toward the bottom. They are blended softly, with lighter strokes on the tops.

Would the amber and moss green palette suit a cream wall?

Yes. The amber, moss green and grey stand out clearly on cream or white, and the tall format fits a narrow wall in a calm room.
