Why our oil paintings are different

Painted by hand.
Framed by our woodworkers.

Your oil painting is only started once you order it, and one of the collective's senior artists paints it by hand in Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City.

The archival canvas print shows the same image, printed rather than painted, so its surface is flat. Both versions come rolled, on a wooden stretcher, or framed.

Painted to order
Every oil painting order goes to one of the collective's senior artists.
Frames made in-house
The collective's woodworkers make the stretchers and the frames.

About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

Woman lifting noodles over a steaming pot on a wet street

The noodle stall sits at street level. On the left an older woman with her hair in a bun crouches on a low stool and raises a long ribbon of noodles with chopsticks. A pot on a small stove stands in front of her, with a metal bucket at her feet and a pale plate beside the pot. Steam rises from the pot and drifts upward into the haze.

On the right, a glass-fronted cart stands under a maroon awning. A second figure is dimly visible behind it. A large pot sits on a stool at the far right edge. Wooden stools and a low table fill the lower left corner, and a cup of chopsticks stands on a pale table behind the woman. Further back, a seated figure in a cap and a few walkers fade into the mist.

Soft grey-blue strokes with one amber lantern

The palette is mostly slate grey-blue and muted green, painted in broad, visible oil strokes that blur the rooftops and far figures. The orange paper lantern under the awning is the warmest and brightest point. Its amber light spills onto the cart and the wet paving, where short horizontal strokes make reflections in gold and brown.

The maroon awning and the brown stools repeat that warmth in smaller amounts. Everything else stays cool and quiet.

A wide misty street scene for calm, low-lit rooms

The landscape format lets the eye travel from the stools at left, through the steam, to the lantern and the cart at right. The cool grey-blue ground suits walls in soft grey, sage or cream, where the single orange glow reads as an accent. The hazy, low-contrast mood fits a dining room, a restaurant or a hallway, and a bedroom or quiet lounge where a rainy-evening scene is welcome.

FAQ

What is the woman at the front doing?

She sits on a low stool and lifts a long strand of noodles with chopsticks above a pot on a small stove. A bucket stands by her feet, and steam rises from the pot beside her.

Where is the orange lantern placed?

It hangs from the edge of the maroon awning on the right, just in front of the glass-fronted cart. It is the brightest warm spot in the painting, and its amber light shows again in the wet paving below.

Which colours sit around the steaming pot and lantern?

Slate grey-blue and muted green fill the sky, houses and street. Amber orange appears in the lantern and the reflections, and maroon in the awning. The brown stools add a little more warmth.

Which walls and rooms suit this misty palette?

Soft grey, sage and cream walls match its cool tones. The low-contrast haze and landscape format suit a dining room, restaurant, hallway or quiet lounge, where the lantern works as a single warm accent.
