This Vietnam moonlight scene is built around the central boat. A figure in a conical hat stands at the back with an oar, while a second figure in a lilac top sits near a glowing orange lantern at the bow. Both are anonymous, small against the water.
Other boats are moored along both banks, their tall poles leaning upwards, several with a small lantern lit on board. On the right, dark tiled houses carry rows of red, yellow and green lanterns, and palm trees rise behind them. The river narrows into pale mist at the far end, under a moon ringed by cream and peach clouds.
The paint is laid on in short, heavy strokes. The water in the foreground swirls in teal, deep green, navy and touches of ochre, while the moon path in the middle is scraped in pale silver and cream. Lantern colours repeat as small orange and red reflections beneath the boats.
The palette is mostly cool slate and teal, with warm amber kept for the lanterns and the lit house fronts. That contrast pulls the eye from the moon down the river to the central boat.
The dark blues and greens suit walls in grey, white or pale stone, where the amber lanterns will stand out. The square format keeps the moon, the boat and the lit bank in balance, so it works in a bedroom, a reading corner or a dim hallway where soft light falls on the canvas.
One figure in a conical hat stands at the stern holding a long oar. The other, in a lilac top and conical hat, sits near the bow beside an orange lantern. Neither has visible features.
Amber, red and yellow are kept for the lanterns on the boats and the house fronts on the right bank, plus their reflections in the water. Everything else is mostly slate blue, teal and dark green.
The moon is a bright cream disc with swirled strokes around it, surrounded by clouds in peach and pale gold. Its light is repeated as scraped silver strokes on the river below.
Its cool blues and teals sit well on grey, white or pale stone walls, where the amber lanterns become the warm accent. The square shape fits a bedroom, a reading corner or a hallway.
