The story behind this artwork.

Gold terraces curving down a green hillside

The curving rice terraces fill most of the canvas, each step bending in long ribbons of golden yellow and olive green. Ripe rice stalks with heavy heads crowd the near ground, painted in loose, visible brushstrokes that catch the warm light.

A few figures work the fields, small against the slopes, and small wooden huts sit among the terraces. In the distance, misty green mountains fade into a pale blue sky with soft clouds.

Golden yellow carries the picture, with olive green in the hills and soft blue cooling the sky and far ridges. The light feels warm and low, and the mist between the mountains keeps the background gentle.

FAQ

Are the figures in the fields easy to make out?

They are small and painted in simple strokes, so they read as tiny figures in the fields, a few of them dressed in dark and red tones. They give scale to the terraces without taking attention from the landscape.

How detailed are the rice stalks in the near ground?

The stalks are loose and rhythmic, with heavy golden heads picked out by visible brushstrokes. They look soft and full rather than sharply drawn, which keeps the eye moving toward the terraces behind.

Does the background look clear or hazy?

The mountains are layered in green and blue and softened by mist, so they stay hazy and calm. The strongest colour is kept for the terraces.
