This Dalat flower scene is built around a sandy path that curves from the lower left up toward the hill. On its right, round hydrangea heads in cobalt, sky blue and lilac crowd the foreground. A figure in a wide-brimmed straw hat, blue jacket and dark trousers with red edges leans in and reaches toward the blooms.
Two more walkers appear farther along the path, one in a white top and dark trousers, the other small and further back in a hat. Beyond them the flower beds climb in narrow bands of red, green, yellow and teal. Pale glass greenhouses stand along the top right, under a sky of cream, pink and slate blue clouds above blue and violet mountains.
The paint is laid on thickly in the textured impasto style, and the ridges stay visible. Each hydrangea is a cluster of small raised dabs, with light blue on top and deeper blue and violet in the shadows. Glossy green leaves in lime and dark teal separate the flowers.
On the left, red, orange and yellow blooms push against the cool blues on the right. The path is worked in broad, ridged strokes of sand, lilac and ochre, which carry the eye from the lower edge up to the walkers. The clouds are drawn in the same heavy, sweeping marks.
The square format lets the path, the hydrangeas and the hillside share the frame evenly. With this much saturated colour and relief, the canvas works best as the single statement piece on a plain wall, such as pale plaster or soft grey, where the reds and blues have room to stand out.
The cool blue and lilac on the right balance the warm reds and oranges on the left, so the painting can sit in a bright room with natural light, where the raised paint catches the daylight.
An anonymous figure in a wide-brimmed straw hat, blue jacket and dark trousers with red edges. The figure stands on the path and reaches toward the pink and blue blooms. Two other walkers are visible farther up the path.
They are mostly cobalt and sky blue, with several lilac and pink-violet heads mixed in. Pale highlights sit on top of each cluster, and lime and dark teal leaves surround them.
Several pale glass greenhouses stand along the upper right, above terraced beds of red, green, yellow and teal. Dark green trees and blue mountains sit behind them.
Yes. The saturated reds, blues and greens stand out against a quiet wall such as pale plaster or soft grey, and the square shape keeps the composition balanced. The heavy paint also catches daylight.
