The story behind this artwork.

A yellow gateway and clock tower with red signboards

The ochre yellow gateway rises above the street, with the square clock tower over a dark arched entrance. The round clock face is pale against the yellow wall. Red lettering on cream and white boards runs along the facades, with a green strip on the side boards, so the warm yellow is framed by bands of red.

Down in the street, bicycles, a small green vehicle and a figure on a scooter move along the market front. A white railing crosses the street and leads the eye toward the entrance.

Sky blue streets and loose brushstrokes

The sky is a soft sky blue streaked with white, and the street below repeats it in deeper blues. Visible, loose strokes keep the scene light and airy rather than sharp.

Look closely at the pavement and you can follow small strokes of orange, blue and cream. Step back and the yellow tower and red signboards read first.

Warm white walls for the ochre yellow gateway

The ochre yellow and sky blue work well on warm white or soft cream walls, where the red signboards become the lively accent. A living room or a dining area suits it, as the palette is warm without being heavy.

FAQ

What is moving on the street below the gateway?

Bicycles, a small green vehicle and a figure on a scooter are on the street, so the scene feels in use. The white railing runs across the street in front of them all.

What does the clock on the tower look like?
