Why our oil paintings are different

Painted by hand.
Framed by our woodworkers.

Your oil painting is only started once you order it, and one of the collective's senior artists paints it by hand in Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City.

The archival canvas print shows the same image, printed rather than painted, so its surface is flat. Both versions come rolled, on a wooden stretcher, or framed.

Painted to order
Every oil painting order goes to one of the collective's senior artists.
Frames made in-house
The collective's woodworkers make the stretchers and the frames.

About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

A weaver at a wooden loom, spinners behind her

The central figure sits at a wooden loom, her dark hair tied back, eyes lowered to the threads. Her hands hold the warp, which runs forward in gold and navy bands over the front beam. She wears a grey blouse with a row of buttons. The scene shows Vietnamese silk being made, from thread to finished cloth.

Behind her, left, a woman in a brown top turns an octagonal spinning wheel beside an open doorway. At right, another woman in plum brown lifts soft pink fabric, with a bolt of the cloth wound into a cylinder beside her.

Loaded oil strokes in brown, cream, navy and pink

The wooden beams are built from broad, flat strokes in warm brown and grey. The warp threads are painted as long streaks of gold, cream and navy that follow the loom’s direction. Hanks of yarn hang on racks in cream, mustard, plum, teal and navy, each one a small block of colour against the pale grey wall.

The pink cloth at right is the softest passage, with smooth folds that contrast with the rough wood. Light comes from the doorway at left and falls across the weaver’s face and the threads.

A square workshop scene for warm, neutral rooms

The loom fills the lower left and the weaver sits just right of centre, so the eye moves from the threads up to her face and on to the hanging yarn. The square format keeps all three women in one frame.

Brown, cream and grey sit easily against white, sand or pale wood walls, and the small navy and plum notes pick up darker furniture. Its calm, working mood suits a study, a dining room or a hallway where a detailed realistic scene can be viewed up close.

FAQ

What is the woman in the centre doing?

She sits at a wooden loom and handles the warp threads with both hands. Her eyes are lowered to the work, and the gold and navy threads stretch toward the front beam.

Which colours are the hanging yarns?

The hanks on the racks are cream, mustard, plum, teal, grey-blue and navy. They hang behind the weaver and give the pale wall small blocks of colour.

What are the two women in the background doing?

The woman at left turns an octagonal spinning wheel near an open doorway. The woman at right lifts a length of pink fabric, with a wound bolt of cloth beside her.

Does the navy on the loom return elsewhere in the scene?

Yes. Navy bands run through the gold warp threads in the foreground, and a deep navy hank hangs on the rack behind the weaver. A little plum and teal hang nearby, so the dark notes repeat across the picture.
