About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

Pine trunks, a red-earth path and walkers

Tall pine trunks rise in dark brown and violet-grey on both sides of a winding track. Yellow-green foliage hangs high above, and light falls through it in patches onto the ground.

A few small figures walk along the path in the distance, which gives the trees their scale. Small pale wildflowers dot the ground beside the track, and the brushstrokes stay loose and visible across the whole scene.

Terracotta ground against olive green leaves

The path is painted in terracotta orange with streaks of cream and grey where the light lands. Above it, olive green and soft yellow leaves meet a hazy lavender-grey backdrop, so the warm ground and the cool depth balance each other.

Warm white or sage walls for the pine trunks

The olive green and terracotta orange sit well against warm white, cream or soft sage walls, where the hazy lavender-grey distance reads as calm. The tall upright format of the pine trunks suits a hallway or a quiet reading corner, and draws the eye along the path.

FAQ

Are the figures on the path easy to make out?

They are small and painted with loose strokes, so they read as walkers rather than individuals. Their clothing shows only as soft touches of colour against the earthy track.

Is the light in the forest strong or soft?

It is soft and scattered. Yellow patches fall on the ground and leaves, while the distance fades into a hazy lavender-grey, so nothing looks harsh.

Can you see the flowers along the ground?

Yes, small pale flowers are scattered beside the path in the lower part of the scene, painted as tiny light touches among the grass and leaves.
