The story behind this artwork.

A dark door set in worn yellow plaster

The whole picture is one wall. Golden yellow plaster fills it, patched and rubbed back in places, with pale blue-grey showing through near the edges. In the middle, a dark brown double door holds two panels of curling white ironwork, and a small blue number plate sits above it.

On both sides, barred windows have their slatted shutters swung open, painted in a muted grey-green. Short rows of rounded balusters run beneath the windows. Dark cables cross the top of the wall. Brushstrokes are loose and visible, so the plaster reads as warm, uneven and lived in.

Strong gold that needs a calm wall beside it

The golden yellow carries the picture, and the dark brown door anchors it. This palette suits a hallway or dining room with white, cream or soft grey walls, where the gold becomes the one warm focus. The symmetrical, upright arrangement of door and windows also gives a steady, formal look above a console or sideboard.

FAQ

What is the ironwork on the door like?

The door has two tall panels filled with curling white scrollwork, set against dark brown wood. The white ironwork stands out against the dark wood.

Are the shutters open or closed?

They are open and swung back against the wall. Their slats and grey-green colour are clear, and behind them you can see the white bars of the windows and a dark interior.

Is the yellow wall smooth or worn?

It is worn. Sunlight lights some areas strongly, while others look patchy, with pale blue-grey patches where the plaster seems rubbed back. The loose brushwork adds to that uneven look.
