Why our oil paintings are different

Painted by hand.
Framed by our woodworkers.

Your oil painting is only started once you order it, and one of the collective's senior artists paints it by hand in Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City.

The archival canvas print shows the same image, printed rather than painted, so its surface is flat. Both versions come rolled, on a wooden stretcher, or framed.

Painted to order
Every oil painting order goes to one of the collective's senior artists.
Frames made in-house
The collective's woodworkers make the stretchers and the frames.

About this painting

The story behind this artwork.

Basket carriers and buffalo on a winding hill path

The group occupies the lower left third of this misty mountain painting. Four women in dark indigo clothing stand and walk on the pale dirt track, and two of them carry woven baskets on their backs. To their left, a man in a conical hat walks beside three water buffalo, and a second figure appears further back on the same path.

Above them the slopes fall away in green terraces crossed by thin, curving tracks. Fog sits in the valley below and between the ridges, and a low sun glows near the centre of the horizon.

Slate blue, sage green and apricot in loaded oil strokes

The palette is cool and close in tone. Slate blue and grey cover the sky and far ridges, sage and olive green fill the nearer hills, and a small patch of apricot and pale gold marks the sun and the clouds around it. Ochre and yellow touches in the foreground grass and rock keep the lower corner warmer than the rest.

The strokes are thick and visible. Clouds are dragged in broad, soft passes, while the path, rocks and clothing are set down in smaller, sharper marks.

A wide misty mountain scene for calm, soft-lit rooms

The landscape format lets the eye travel from the figures up the diagonal ridges to the sun. The quiet blue-grey and green palette suits bedrooms, spas, hotel corridors and reading corners where a restful, low-contrast picture is wanted, and the small warm glow gives light-coloured or white walls a single point of colour.

FAQ

What are the people on the path doing?

Four women in dark indigo clothing walk and stand together on the track, and two carry woven baskets on their backs. A man in a conical hat walks beside the buffalo just to their left.

How many water buffalo are in the painting?

Three water buffalo are visible on the path at lower left, walking in a loose line with a man in a conical hat beside them.

Where is the light in the misty mountain scene?

A low sun sits near the centre of the horizon between distant ridges. Its apricot and pale gold glow spreads into the clouds and the fog above the valley.

Would the blue-grey and green palette suit a pale wall?

Yes. The slate blue, sage green and soft apricot are low in contrast, so they sit calmly against white, cream or light grey walls, with the sun glow as the one warm accent.
