Hoi An wall art shows the old town in its own colours: yellow plaster walls, strings of silk lanterns, wooden boats on the river and figures in conical hats on wet cobbled streets. Several scenes are painted at night, a good share are street views, and a few follow the river.
Lantern streets and riverside nights
The lantern pictures put the light in the lanterns themselves. In one night view of the river, the water is dark blue and the paper lanterns on it are orange and yellow, while boats and a crowd line the embankment. Another painting hangs rows of orange, red and green lanterns over a yellow street, with walkers on glossy paving and a deepening blue sky. Both also hang in Lanterns, and their deep blues and oranges sit well on a pale or grey wall.
Yellow walls, a cyclo and a bicycle
Weathered gold runs through the street scenes, and these works also appear in Yellow. In one, a blue cyclo stands against a red and gold gateway with orange lanterns, a carved door and a tiled roof. In another, a figure in white pushes a bicycle along beside a worn golden wall, and the wet street below breaks the scene into soft ripples. The gold in both suits a pale wall.
The covered bridge and the lantern workshop
The Japanese Covered Bridge is painted with pink end walls, stone piers and a wide grey-green river that carries its reflection. A different picture stays indoors, where figures in blue and red tunics shape silk lanterns among spools of thread and bamboo strips, in loose brushwork. The river views are close to River Scene too.
