Orange, yellow, green, red and pink lanterns glow over a Hoi An river, a street, a market stall and a workshop in these night paintings. They come as hand-painted oil paintings or as archival canvas prints.
Lanterns over water, street and stall
One painting is set on the Hoi An riverside at night: orange and yellow paper lanterns glow on dark blue water, wooden boats sit below, and a crowd lines the embankment in front of yellow-walled buildings lit from within. Another is a lantern stall, where pink, green, yellow and orange silk lanterns fill the top of the picture, with a figure in a dark jacket beneath them and baskets and goods set out at street level.
Street views fill much of the range. In one, orange, red and green lanterns hang in rows over a street of yellow walls, while a crowd of figures walks the glossy paving below a deepening blue sky. Another street view puts a crowd under red, orange and green lanterns; golden shopfronts and the deep blue sky shine back from wet cobbles, painted in loose, visible brushstrokes. A further painting shows the old-town lantern street after an evening rain, in layered oil with warm cobblestone reflections, in a vertical format.
The hands that make the lanterns
One painting leaves the street for the workshop: lantern makers in blue and red tunics work silk around spools of thread and bamboo strips, beneath a roof full of hanging lights, in loose, glowing brushwork. It suits a wall where you want the craft rather than the crowd.
Blue grounds and lit oranges on your wall
The deep blue of the water and sky carries most of these pictures, so the orange and yellow lights stand out against it. A pale or soft grey wall lets the blue read clearly. For the full old town beyond the lanterns, see Hoi An, and for more dark skies and lit windows, the Night Scene paintings share many of these works.
