Egrets, cranes and ducks over the water

One painting sends egrets up from flooded paddies at dusk, with a dark buffalo and a figure in a conical hat below, all in thick impasto strokes under a peach and lilac sky. In another, sarus cranes, grey with red heads, stand in shallow water among reeds, one bending to drink, beneath a pale pink and grey dawn. In the duck scene, a herder in a conical hat raises a long stick over the flock, while palms, green paddies and low roofs sit under an amber sunset. The cranes and the duck herder also hang in Mekong Delta.

Koi, lotus and a sea turtle

Several paintings turn to the pond and the sea. In the pale green pond, fish in orange-red, cream, gold and black move around in a loop, and soft rings mark the water behind each one; a wide lotus leaf and a pink bud finish the picture with green and rose. Another shows golden carp turning around a single black one on turquoise water, with lotus blossoms lining the top edge and ridges of thick paint carrying the swirl. The sea painting has a large turtle rising through turquoise water toward slanting gold light; at the upper right, small turtles sit near a beach nest, and thick, energetic strokes build the waves.

Colours that suit a pale wall

The egret paintings carry peach, lilac and apricot, which sit well on a pale or cream wall. The koi painting on pale green water sits well on a white wall, where the orange-red and gold of the fish stand out against the green.
