Curated Collections

Countryside wall art of Vietnam shows rice terraces, flooded paddies with water buffalo, Mekong canals, Da Lat flower hills and fishing bays, many of them with a small figure in a conical hat. Each scene is hand-painted in oil by a senior artist of the Binh Thanh collective, or printed as an archival canvas print.

Paddies, buffalo and egrets

One canvas puts a farmer and a dark buffalo in a flooded field at sunrise, with lavender reflections and lime green shoots. Another stands a grey buffalo in shallow water beside a curving earth path under a pale, even sky. In a third, white egrets lift over the paddies while a dark buffalo wades in the pool below an apricot sky. A close view of bowed rice heads fills a whole canvas with amber grain and clear drops.

Terraces and hill villages

One terrace painting shows curving ridges in amber and olive stepping down a hillside, with white mist between them and houses catching a pink and gold sky. Another lets ripe gold terraces glow below layered green mountains. The Sapa pages hold these terraces, a Hmong market lane with woven baskets and folded cloth, and indigo cloths over dye vats. Broader mountain scenery is gathered in Northwest Vietnam.

Water, boats and flowers

One painting shows a herder wading through golden floodwater with a crowd of ducks, palms and low roofs behind. Three sarus cranes with red heads wade through reeds in dawn mist. Elsewhere round boats float in a pale bay below thatched huts, and a rowing boat crosses a green river under limestone hills. In Da Lat, yellow wild sunflowers crowd a misty hillside and blue and lilac hydrangeas fill a square canvas of flower terraces. Pink water lilies sit beside a village boat, and a black butterfly hovers by pink blossoms.

The amber and olive terrace scenes sit well on a pale wall. The grey green buffalo canvas, with its pale even sky, suits a quiet white one. The rice harvest scene is a tall canvas of golden fields and blue hills, and it fits a narrow stretch of wall.
